2. MAY 25TH, 2020 George Floyd is killed by police officers. APRIL 11TH, 2021 Daunte Wright is killed by a police officer. 321 DAYS PASSED BETWEEN THE MURDER OF GEORGE FLOYD — THE CATALYST FOR MOST WHITE FOLKS' COMMITMENT TO ALLYSHIP AND ANTIRACISM — AND THE MURDER OF DAUNTE WRIGHT.
3. WHITE FOLKS: LET'S DO A QUICK EXERCISE.
4. This color represents a day that you took intentional, concrete action to practice allyship to the Black community and/or to advance antiracism. This color represents a day that you did nothing to practice allyship or antiracism. Using those two anchors, reflect on your commitment to, and practice of, allyship and antiracism.
6. THIS IS THE TREND IN WHITE PEOPLE'S COMMITMENT TO ALLYSHIP AND ANTIRACISM THAT I'VE OBSERVED OVER THE PAST 321 DAYS.
7. MAY 25TH, 2020 George Floyd is killed by police officers. AUGUST 23RD, 2020 Jacob Blake is shot by police officers. OCTOBER 26TH, 2020 Walter Wallace Jr. is killed by police officers. MARCH 8TH 2021 Derek Chauvin's trial begins. MARCH 13TH 2021 One year since the murder of Breonna Taylor. APRIL 11, 2021 Daunte Wright is killed by a police officer.
8. YOUR SOLIDARITY SHOULDN'T FOLLOW THE NEWS CYCLE.
9. YOUR SOLIDARITY SHOULDN'T REQUIRE ANOTHER VIRAL VIDEO OF A BLACK PERSON BEING INJURED OR MURDERED.
10. YOUR SOLIDARITY SHOULDN'T BE PREDICATED ON THE LOSS OF ANOTHER BLACK LIFE.

“Racism is systemic. Its outbursts are not isolated incidents.” -Angela Davis

Your solidarity shouldn’t follow the news cycle. Your solidarity shouldn’t require another viral video of a Black man being killed. Your solidarity shouldn’t be predicated on the loss of another Black life.

This is now the third time I’ve updated and shared this graphic. This is why we’re still fighting. This is why we’re still trying to hold our elected officials accountable. This is why we’re still protesting. Nothing substantial has changed since George Floyd’s death. And more Black men and Black people will continue to be killed by state sanctioned violence until we abolish the police and dismantle white supremacy entiree

Dark blue days in this infographic represent intentional, concrete, and consistent action from white allies. Voting. Protesting. Breaking white solidarity every time you witness it. Participating in ongoing mutual aid. Redistributing your wealth — to fundraisers, to individuals, to your neighbors, to local businesses. Educating yourself and others. Sacrificing your social status, privilege, and/or power to make space for Black folks. Stopping and witnessing or physically intervening if you see a Black person interacting with police. Confronting and dismantling the racism that exists in your own home, your workplace, your classroom, your neighborhood. Paying reparations. Joining the fight to abolish your city’s police department.

Rest in power, Daunte Wright. The fight continues.

A note: this is an “artistic” rendering of my own personal experience and observations over the past year or so — it’s not based on data and it’s clearly subjective. The intention of this graphic is to illustrate a problem I see all too often: a lack of sustained attention and action from white allies. This graphic is not comprehensive; it does not include all Black folks who were murdered by police over the past year, nor does it capture other acts of white supremacist violence like the rise in AAPI hate crimes. But let me be clear: white supremacy is the root of all of these racially-based acts. We will only be able to make meaningful change through intentional + sustained action.

Image Description

There are ten slides. A grid of multicolored dots is initially used to display dates, but substituted for a grid of dots using a white-to-navy gradient key to demonstrate no allyship (white) to concrete action (navy).
